Form CFW1 (Registering for Self Assessment for self-employed sole traders).

One of the first forms encountered by any individual thinking of setting up in business on their own is a Form CFW1.

This form notifies HMRC that you have commenced self employment, and must be completed within 3 months of doing so, or you risk financial penalties.

Click on the form to the left, to download a copy.

Not sure if you need to complete a return, or register as self employed? Check out HMRC's own guide here;  Form CFW1 Online

Form SA1 (Registering for Self Assessment and getting a tax return).

Sometimes it will still be necessary to register for Self Assessment, even if we are not starting out as self employed (for example, if we are higher paid employees, or have property rental income).

Please note; this form should only be used if you are unable to register online. If you are able to do so, then you should complete the online form, by following this link;

Form 64-8 (Authorising your agent).

Whether self-employed or not, if completing a Self Assessment Tax Return, you may well be seeking the assistance of and accountant (or agent) to assist you, thereby ensuring that the forms are completed correctly, and that tax is neither under or over paid.

Although many agents obtain their authorisation online these days, you can still complete a Form 64-8 to authorise your agent to act on your behalf in all matter of tax issues.
